Windows 11’s Snipping Tool can capture part or all of the screen, delay a screenshot, annotate captures, and record the screen on supported systems.
Take a Screenshot with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose a capture mode, such as rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
- Select the area or window you want to capture.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or the app to edit and save the capture.
Open Snipping Tool Directly
- Open Start.
- Search for Snipping Tool.
- Open the app.
- Choose the screenshot options you need, then select New.
Use a Delayed Screenshot
Snipping Tool can delay a new screenshot, which is useful for capturing menus or interface elements that disappear when you click elsewhere. Choose an available delay before starting the snip.
Record the Screen
Current Windows 11 Snipping Tool versions include screen recording; Microsoft introduced the built-in recording feature in 2023. Open Snipping Tool, choose the recording mode, select the area to record, and start recording. Available audio and recording options can vary with the installed app version.
Where Screenshots Are Saved
A snip is copied to the clipboard, and current Snipping Tool versions can also automatically save captures. Check the app’s settings if you want to change its automatic-save behavior.
