Microsoft Edge blocks many website pop-ups by default. If a trusted site needs a pop-up for a sign-in, statement, form, or other feature, it is usually safer to allow that specific site instead of disabling pop-up blocking everywhere.
How to Allow Pop-Ups for One Site
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more, then Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Select Site permissions, then All permissions.
- Select Pop-ups and redirects.
- Under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects, select the option to add a site.
- Enter the trusted site’s address and add it.
How to Disable Edge’s Pop-Up Blocker
- Go to Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Open Site permissions > All permissions > Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn off the Blocked (recommended) setting.
Disabling the blocker globally allows more sites to open pop-ups, including potentially misleading or malicious ones. Turn it back on when you no longer need the exception.
Pop-Ups vs. Website Notifications
Website notifications are different from pop-up windows. If messages are appearing in the Windows notification area rather than as browser windows or tabs, review the site’s notification permission instead of changing the pop-up blocker.
If Pop-Ups Continue While Blocking Is On
Microsoft notes that some advertisements are built into the webpage and are not traditional browser pop-ups. Edge’s pop-up blocker cannot block every in-page advertisement. Also check extensions and scan the PC if suspicious windows continue appearing.
Summary
For a trusted site, add a site-specific exception under Edge’s Pop-ups and redirects settings. Disable the global blocker only when necessary, because leaving it enabled provides better protection against unwanted pop-ups.
