How to Switch Between Desktops in Windows 11

//

Michael Collins

Windows 11 virtual desktops let you organize open apps into separate workspaces. The fastest keyboard method for switching between existing desktops is Windows + Ctrl + Left Arrow or Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow.

Switch Desktops with Task View

  1. Select the Task View button on the taskbar, or press Windows + Tab.
  2. Find the desktop you want.
  3. Select it.

Switch Desktops with the Keyboard

  1. Press Windows + Ctrl + Right Arrow to move to a desktop on the right.
  2. Press Windows + Ctrl + Left Arrow to move to a desktop on the left.

Create Another Desktop

  1. Press Windows + Tab.
  2. Select New desktop.
  3. Open or arrange apps in the new workspace.

Close a Virtual Desktop

Open Task View and close the desktop you no longer need. Closing a virtual desktop does not normally mean that all of its open applications are terminated; Windows moves open windows to another desktop.

Virtual Desktops Are Not Separate User Accounts

Virtual desktops organize windows for the same signed-in user. They do not create separate user profiles, security boundaries, or independent copies of applications.

Summary

Use Windows + Tab to choose a desktop visually, or press Windows + Ctrl + Left/Right Arrow to switch quickly with the keyboard.
