Windows 10 can switch from one user account to another without signing the first user out. The first user’s apps and session can remain open in the background, while the second user signs in to a separate Windows profile.
How to Switch Users in Windows 10
- Open the Start menu.
- Select your account name or account picture.
- Select the other user account if it appears.
- Enter that user’s password, PIN, or other sign-in credential.
Depending on the PC’s configuration, Windows can instead show a Switch user choice that takes you to the sign-in screen, where you select another account.
Use Ctrl + Alt + Delete
You can also press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and use Switch user when that option is available. This is useful when you do not want to navigate through the Start menu.
Switch User vs. Sign Out
Switching users keeps the current Windows session signed in. Signing out closes that user’s apps and ends the session. Save important work either way: another administrator, restart, update, or shutdown can still affect an open background session.
Why Don’t I See Another Account?
The other account must exist on the PC and be available for sign-in. Organization policies can also change which account and switch-user options appear. If you need a new account, add it through Windows account settings before trying to switch to it.
Windows 10 Support Status
Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Compatible PCs should move to Windows 11 for ongoing mainstream security and servicing.
