You can create a custom iPhone ringtone without buying a tone by using GarageBand and audio that you have the right and technical ability to edit. A song being available in a streaming service does not automatically mean it can be exported as a ringtone.
Before You Start
You need audio that GarageBand can import. Protected music or a track available only for streaming may not be usable. Choose a short section of the audio for the ringtone.
Create the Ringtone in GarageBand
- Install or open GarageBand on the iPhone.
- Create an audio project.
- Switch to Tracks view.
- Open the loop/media browser and locate audio you are permitted to use.
- Drag it into the timeline.
- Trim the clip to the section you want.
- Return to My Songs to save the project.
- Touch and hold the project and choose Share.
- Select Ringtone.
- Name and export the ringtone.
Select the Ringtone Later
- Open Settings.
- Open Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Select the custom ringtone.
Why a Streaming Song May Not Work
A streaming subscription grants listening access under the service’s terms; it does not necessarily provide an unprotected audio file that GarageBand can edit and export. Offline downloads from a streaming service can remain protected.
Can You Use Your Own Recording?
Yes. Original music, a voice recording, or another audio file you have permission to use can be a good source if GarageBand can import it.
Assign It to One Contact
Open the person’s contact card, choose Edit, open the ringtone field, and select your custom sound. That caller can then use a different tone from the default.
If the Ringtone Is Too Long
Trim the project to the part you want. GarageBand may offer to adjust an overlong ringtone during export, but manual trimming gives you better control over the start and end.
