Windows 10 includes Xbox Game Bar, which can record many games and application windows with system audio and, when enabled, microphone audio. It is not a full desktop recorder and may not capture File Explorer, the Windows desktop, or protected video content the way a dedicated screen-recording application can.
How to Record an App with Xbox Game Bar
- Open the game or application you want to record.
- Press Windows + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the Capture widget if it is not already visible.
- Choose whether the microphone should be on or off for the recording.
- Select Start recording, or use Windows + Alt + R when the capture shortcut is available.
- Use the application normally while Game Bar records it.
- Press Windows + Alt + R again or use the recording controls to stop.

Where Are Game Bar Recordings Saved?
Game Bar normally stores recordings in the Videos > Captures folder. You can also review captured clips through the Game Bar gallery.
Why Can’t Game Bar Record My Desktop?
Game Bar is designed primarily for games and applications, not as a universal Windows desktop recorder. Certain Windows interfaces and protected content cannot be captured. If you need to record the desktop, File Explorer, multiple applications as one continuous desktop, or specialized audio sources, use an appropriate screen-recording tool instead.
Check Recording Permissions and Settings
If the microphone is silent, verify Windows microphone privacy permissions and make sure the correct input device is selected. If Game Bar does not open, review the Xbox Game Bar and capture settings available on your Windows installation.
Windows 10 Support Status
Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Standard Windows 10 installations no longer receive the normal free security updates and technical support. Eligible devices may have temporary Extended Security Updates options. If your PC supports Windows 11, moving to a supported Windows release is the better long-term approach.
