How to Reset Network Settings on iPhone

Resetting network settings on an iPhone can help with persistent Wi-Fi, cellular, VPN, or related connection problems. It does not erase your photos, messages, apps, or other personal media, but it does remove saved network information that you may need to enter again.

Try Simpler Fixes First

Apple recommends restarting the device before using broader reset options. For a Wi-Fi problem, also check whether other devices can use the same network and restart the router when appropriate. A network reset is most useful after simpler connection troubleshooting has failed.

How to Reset Network Settings on iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Reset Network Settings.
  6. Enter your passcode if requested and confirm the reset.

What Does Reset Network Settings Remove?

Apple says Reset Network Settings removes saved network settings, including Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, and previously used VPN and APN settings. Apple also notes that the device name in Settings > General > About is reset to “iPhone” and manually trusted certificates are changed to untrusted. Be prepared to reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore any special carrier, VPN, school, or workplace network configuration afterward.

Does It Delete Photos or Apps?

No. Reset Network Settings is not the same as erasing the iPhone. Your photos, apps, messages, contacts, and documents are not removed by this network reset.

Do Not Choose Erase All Content and Settings by Mistake

The Transfer or Reset iPhone screen also contains much more destructive options. Erase All Content and Settings is intended to wipe the iPhone, such as when preparing it for a new owner. You do not need that option to troubleshoot an ordinary network problem.

What to Do After the Reset

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Select your Wi-Fi network.
  3. Enter its password again.
  4. Restore any required VPN, APN, or organization-provided network configuration.
  5. Test the connection that was giving you trouble.

If multiple devices still cannot access the internet through the same Wi-Fi network, the problem may be with the router or internet service rather than the iPhone.

Summary

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The reset does not erase personal media, but it does remove saved Wi-Fi and other network settings that may need to be configured again.
