You can hide the Windows 10 taskbar search box without disabling Windows Search. This frees taskbar space while leaving search available through the Start menu and keyboard.
Hide the Search Box
- Right-click an empty area of the Windows 10 taskbar.
- Point to Search.
- Select Hidden.
The large search box should disappear from the taskbar.
Show a Search Icon Instead
If you want a smaller search control, right-click the taskbar, open the Search submenu, and choose the search-icon option when available. This uses less taskbar space than the full search box.
How to Search After Hiding the Box
Open Start and begin typing to search for apps, settings, and files. Hiding the taskbar box changes the interface; it does not remove Windows Search from the operating system.
Will Hiding Search Make Windows Faster?
Do not expect a meaningful performance improvement merely from hiding the taskbar control. This setting is mainly useful for appearance and taskbar space.
Windows 10 Support Status
Support for standard Windows 10 version 22H2 ended on October 14, 2025. ESU programs and editions with different lifecycles can have different servicing status. Eligible PCs should generally move to Windows 11 for longer-term support.
