Windows 10 can install common font files directly from File Explorer. Download fonts only from sources you trust, extract compressed downloads first, and check the font’s license if you plan to use it commercially or redistribute it.
Install a Font File
- Download the font from a trusted source.
- If it is inside a ZIP archive, extract the files.
- Find the font file in File Explorer.
- Right-click the font and choose Install.
- If Install for all users is available and appropriate, use it when you need the font available to other Windows accounts. Administrator approval may be required.
- Restart an application if it does not immediately show the new font.
Preview Before Installing
You can open a supported font file to preview its characters and styles before installation. Font packages can include separate files for regular, bold, italic, and other variants.
Use Trusted Font Sources
Avoid unknown sites that bundle fonts with installers or unrelated software. Prefer the font creator or a reputable font library. A font being free to download does not necessarily mean it is licensed for every commercial use.
If the Font Does Not Appear
Close and reopen the application. Some programs load their font list only when they start. Also confirm that you installed the correct font file and that the application supports its format.
Windows 10 Support Status
Support for standard Windows 10 version 22H2 ended on October 14, 2025. ESU programs and editions with different lifecycles can have different servicing status. Eligible PCs should generally move to Windows 11 for longer-term support.
