Microsoft lets you download Windows 11 installation media without a download fee, but downloading Windows is not the same as owning a Windows license. Activation requires a valid digital license or product key.
An eligible PC that already has a qualifying genuine Windows license may upgrade to Windows 11 without buying another license. A new or unlicensed device may require a purchase.
Check for a Free Upgrade
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- If Windows 11 is offered for the eligible PC, follow the prompts.
Download vs. License
Microsoft provides installation tools and ISO files for upgrades, clean installations, repairs, and installation media. Those files do not provide a free product key. Windows normally activates with either a digital license associated with the device or a valid 25-character product key.
Check Activation
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Activation.
- Check the activation status and edition.
If Windows says it is activated with a digital license, there may be no product key you need to find.
Can You Reinstall Without Paying Again?
If the same Windows 11 edition was already activated on the same hardware with a digital license, you can normally reinstall that edition and let it reactivate online. During setup, select I don’t have a product key when appropriate and install the edition that matches the existing license.
If the PC Has Never Been Licensed
Installing Windows does not create a license. If the device has neither a valid digital license nor a product key, purchase a legitimate license from Microsoft or an authorized source to activate it.
Avoid “Free Key” Sites
Do not use key generators, activation cracks, leaked keys, or scripts that claim to manufacture a legitimate Windows license. A generic installation key or activation workaround is not a valid license for your device and can also expose the computer to malware.
Product Keys and PC Firmware
Some computers that shipped with Windows have an OEM key stored in firmware, while others primarily reactivate through a digital license. You normally do not need to extract a firmware key simply to reinstall the same properly licensed edition.
