Windows 10 can activate with either a 25-character product key or a digital license. Many PCs do not require you to find and re-enter a product key when reinstalling the same edition of Windows on the same hardware because activation is handled by a digital license.
First Check Whether Windows Is Activated
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Activation.
- Read the activation status and whether Windows reports a digital license.
If Windows is already activated with a digital license and you are reinstalling the same Windows edition on the same device, you may not need a product key during setup.
Where Microsoft Says to Look for a Product Key
The correct location depends on how you obtained Windows. A new PC can have a key preinstalled in the device, included in its packaging, or provided on a Certificate of Authenticity. A retail copy can have the key on a card or label. A digital retail purchase can provide it in the confirmation email or retailer’s digital locker. Microsoft Store purchase records can also be relevant for qualifying purchases.
Digital License vs. Product Key
A product key is a 25-character activation code. A digital license activates Windows without requiring you to enter a product key. Microsoft says free upgrades to Windows 10 and certain Microsoft Store upgrades use digital licenses, which is why some legitimately activated PCs have no product key that you need to type during a reinstall.
Can You Read an OEM Key from Firmware?
Some PCs that shipped with Windows store an OEM key in firmware. Advanced users can inspect firmware licensing information with Windows management tools, but a returned key is not necessarily the key currently responsible for activation. Check Activation first and treat firmware-key retrieval as a diagnostic step, not proof of licensing ownership.
Avoid Third-Party Key Finder Downloads
Do not install an unknown “product key finder” merely to prepare for a reinstall. These utilities can display generic, firmware, or otherwise misleading keys, and downloading untrusted system tools creates unnecessary security risk. Start with Microsoft’s activation status and your legitimate purchase records.
What If You Changed Hardware?
A significant hardware change, especially a motherboard replacement, can affect activation. If the digital license was linked appropriately, Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter and reactivation process may help. Licensing rules still apply, so a key from another device is not automatically transferable.
Windows 10 Support Status
Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Finding a product key does not restore mainstream support. If the PC supports Windows 11, moving to a supported Windows version is the better long-term plan.
