How to Find Your Windows 11 Product Key

Windows 11 can activate with either a 25-character product key or a digital license. Many modern PCs use a digital license, so there may be no product key you need to retrieve before reinstalling Windows.

Start by checking the Activation page. It tells you whether Windows is activated and helps determine whether looking for a key is even necessary.

Check Windows 11 Activation First

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Activation.
  4. Review the activation status and Windows edition.

If Windows says it is activated with a digital license, activation is associated with the device rather than requiring you to type a product key for ordinary use.

Where a Windows Product Key May Be Located

The correct place to look depends on how Windows was purchased.

  • PC that came with Windows: the key may be preinstalled by the manufacturer, included with the packaging, or supplied on a Certificate of Authenticity where applicable.
  • Retail boxed copy: look for the key on the card or label supplied with the package.
  • Digital purchase from an authorized retailer: check the confirmation email or the retailer’s digital locker.
  • Digital purchase from Microsoft: check the confirmation email and Microsoft account order history as applicable.
  • Free upgrade: the device normally uses a digital license instead of a new product key.

Can Windows Show an OEM Key Stored in Firmware?

Some computers have an OEM product key embedded in their firmware. Administrative tools can sometimes report that firmware value, but it should not be confused with proof that the currently installed Windows edition is licensed by that exact key.

If you are reinstalling the same edition on a PC that is already digitally activated, extracting a firmware key is usually unnecessary.

Reinstall Windows 11 When You Have a Digital License

Microsoft says that if the device already has a digital license, you can reinstall the same Windows 11 edition without entering a product key. During setup, choose I don’t have a product key when appropriate. After installation, the matching edition can activate online using the existing digital license.

Home and Pro Keys Are Not Interchangeable

The Windows edition matters. A digital license for Windows 11 Home does not automatically activate Windows 11 Pro. Before reinstalling, check Settings > System > Activation and make sure the edition you plan to install matches the license you own.

What If You Replaced the Motherboard?

A significant hardware change can interrupt digital-license activation because the license is associated with the device hardware. If your digital license is linked to your Microsoft account, Windows provides an Activation troubleshooter for eligible reactivation scenarios.

Avoid Free-Key Generators and Activation Scripts

A website displaying a product key does not mean that key gives you a legitimate Windows license. Avoid key generators, leaked volume-license keys, cracks, KMS emulators, and scripts that promise permanent free activation. Besides licensing problems, unofficial activation tools can introduce malware or make security-sensitive system changes.

Do Generic Installation Keys Activate Windows?

Keys used for installation or edition-selection purposes should not be confused with a purchased license. Windows ultimately needs a valid activation entitlement for the device.

Summary

Check Windows 11’s Activation page before trying to find a product key. Many PCs use a digital license and do not require you to retrieve a key for a same-edition reinstall. If you purchased a product-key license, look in the original packaging, retailer confirmation, Microsoft purchase records, or manufacturer documentation. Avoid sites and tools offering unauthorized “free” activation keys.
