How to Factory Reset a Windows 11 Laptop

//

Michael Collins

Windows 11’s Reset this PC feature reinstalls Windows and can either keep your personal files or remove them. Before resetting a laptop, back up anything important and make sure you can access the BitLocker recovery key if the device is encrypted.

Before You Reset the Laptop

  1. Back up documents, photos, browser data, application data, and other files you need.
  2. Make sure important cloud files have finished syncing.
  3. Locate the BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled.
  4. Record software licenses or sign-in information you may need afterward.
  5. Connect the laptop to power.

How to Reset Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Next to Reset this PC, select Reset PC.
  5. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything.
  6. Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
  7. Review the additional settings carefully.
  8. Continue only after you understand what Windows will remove.

Keep My Files vs. Remove Everything

Keep my files reinstalls Windows while preserving personal files, but it removes apps and resets settings. Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings as part of the reinstall. A backup is still important even when choosing Keep my files.

Cloud Download vs. Local Reinstall

Cloud download downloads a fresh Windows copy and is useful when local Windows files may be damaged. Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and can be faster when internet access is limited.

Manufacturer Apps and Customizations

Windows can offer a Restore preinstalled apps option when manufacturer customizations are available. If enabled, those manufacturer customizations are reapplied. Because of this, Reset this PC is not always identical to a completely generic Windows installation.

If You Are Selling or Giving Away the Laptop

Choose the removal options intended for giving away or selling the PC and enable drive-cleaning/data-cleaning when offered. Microsoft notes that this consumer data-erasure feature makes removed files harder to recover but does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards. Organizations with formal disposal requirements should use an approved sanitization process.

Do Not Interrupt the Reset

The screen can remain black for an extended period and the PC can restart itself during reset. Microsoft warns that manually restarting the computer during the process can cause the reset to fail.

Summary

Back up first, secure the BitLocker recovery key, then use Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything, then Cloud download or Local reinstall, based on what you need to preserve and the condition of the current Windows installation.
