You can reset an HP laptop running Windows 11 with Microsoft’s Reset this PC feature. Cloud download obtains a fresh Windows copy from Microsoft and can help when local Windows files are damaged. Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and can be faster when internet access is limited. The two choices describe where Windows installation files come from; they do not determine whether your personal files are kept.
Is Reset This PC the Same as an HP Factory Reset?
Not necessarily. Microsoft’s Reset this PC reinstalls Windows, and the reset options can include a Restore preinstalled apps setting that reapplies customizations from the PC manufacturer when that option is available and enabled. HP recovery media or an HP recovery image is a separate recovery path that may be appropriate when you specifically need HP’s recovery environment or factory software. Review the reset summary before starting so you know which manufacturer customizations Windows says it will restore.
If Windows Will Not Start
You can access Windows Recovery Environment and use Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. An encrypted device may ask for its BitLocker recovery key before recovery operations can continue.
If You Are Selling or Giving Away the Laptop
Choose the removal options appropriate for transferring ownership and review the data-cleaning setting Windows offers. Microsoft notes that the consumer data-erasure option is not intended to meet government or industry data-erasure standards, so organizations with formal sanitization requirements should follow their approved process.
