How to Enter Windows 11 Recovery Mode

Windows 11 includes the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), which provides Startup Repair, Startup Settings, System Restore, Command Prompt, and other recovery tools. You can enter it from Settings, from the sign-in screen, or automatically after repeated startup failures.

Method 1: Open Windows RE from Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Recovery.
  3. Next to Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  4. Confirm the restart if prompted.

The PC restarts into Windows RE. Choose Troubleshoot to reach the available recovery tools.

Method 2: Use Shift + Restart

  1. Open the Power menu from Start or the Windows sign-in screen.
  2. Hold the Shift key while selecting Restart.
  3. Keep Shift held until the restart begins.

This is useful when Windows reaches the sign-in screen but you cannot use the desktop normally.

If Windows Will Not Start

Windows can enter Windows RE automatically after repeated failed starts. Microsoft also documents interrupting the normal boot process twice so that Automatic Repair appears on the third start. Use this only when you cannot reach the normal recovery controls.

What You Can Do in Windows RE

Under Troubleshoot and Advanced options, the available tools can include Startup Repair, Startup Settings, Uninstall Updates, System Restore, Command Prompt, firmware settings, and other recovery features. On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, some PCs can also offer Quick machine recovery, which can check Windows Update for a Microsoft-provided fix after certain widespread boot failures. The exact options depend on the PC and Windows configuration.

BitLocker Recovery Key Warning

Some recovery operations can request a BitLocker recovery key. If the PC uses device encryption or BitLocker, make sure you can access the recovery key before making major recovery changes.

Summary

The safest normal route is Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. Shift + Restart is useful from the sign-in screen, while automatic recovery is intended for PCs that cannot start normally.
