The correct way to change the name shown in Windows 11 depends on the type of account you use. A Microsoft account, local Windows account, and work or school account are managed differently. Changing the displayed account name also does not rename the existing profile folder under C:\Users.
First, Identify the Account Type

- Select Your info.
- Check whether Windows indicates that you are using a Microsoft account or local account.
Change the Name for a Microsoft Account
- Open Microsoft’s account profile or the Your info page for your Microsoft account.

If having a differently named profile folder is essential, the safer approach is to create a new user profile with the desired account name and migrate your personal files after making a backup.
