How to Increase Microphone Volume in Windows 11

If your microphone is too quiet in Windows 11, first increase its Input volume in Sound settings and use Windows’ microphone test to hear the result. A separate Microphone Boost control is not available for every microphone or audio driver.

How to Increase Microphone Input Volume

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Sound.
  3. Under Input, select the microphone you want to adjust.
  4. Find Input volume and raise it gradually.
  5. Under the microphone test, select Start test.
  6. Speak at your normal volume.
  7. Select Stop test and play the sample.
  8. Adjust the input volume again if necessary.

What If the Microphone Is Still Quiet?

Check that the correct microphone is selected, the headset or USB device is connected properly, and the microphone is positioned close enough to your voice. A laptop, webcam, headset, and USB microphone can all appear as separate input devices.

Microphone Boost Is Not Available Everywhere

Some audio drivers expose an additional gain or Microphone Boost control in classic sound-device properties, while others do not. Do not assume a missing Boost slider means Windows is broken. USB microphones often manage gain through their own hardware or software instead.

Check App-Specific Microphone Settings

Teams, Zoom, Discord, games, recording programs, and browsers can select their own microphone and sometimes apply automatic level control. If Windows’ microphone test sounds good but one app remains quiet, check that application’s input-device and microphone-level settings.

Check Microphone Permissions

If an app cannot hear the microphone at all, review Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and make sure the required microphone access is enabled. A permission problem is different from a low input level.

Avoid Setting the Level Too High

More gain is not always better. Excessive input level can add hiss, background noise, clipping, or distortion. Increase the level while making test recordings and stop when speech is clear without sounding harsh or distorted.

Summary

Go to Settings > System > Sound, select the microphone, adjust Input volume, and use Start test to check the result. If Windows sounds correct but one application is quiet, troubleshoot that application’s microphone settings next.
