Windows 11 activates with either a digital license or a valid 25-character product key, depending on how you obtained Windows. Start by checking the Activation page before buying a key or trying to change anything.
Check Windows 11 Activation
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Activation.
- Review the activation status and any message about a digital license.
Activate with a Digital License
A digital license is associated with the device’s hardware and can be linked to a Microsoft account. Microsoft says a device with a digital license can reinstall the same Windows 11 edition without entering a product key and activate online afterward.
Activate with a Product Key
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Open the product-key change option.
- Enter the legitimate 25-character key.
- Follow the activation prompts.
The Windows edition matters. A key or digital license for one edition does not automatically activate a different edition.
After a Major Hardware Change
A significant hardware change, particularly replacing a motherboard, can affect activation. If your digital license was linked to your Microsoft account, Microsoft’s activation troubleshooting process may help reactivate the device. License terms and transfer rights still apply.
If You Do Not Have a License
Microsoft provides a Store link from the Activation settings for purchasing a Windows 11 digital license when needed. Do not use unauthorized activation scripts, leaked keys, or third-party “activators.”
